About VTMO
The Vietnam TITAN Mathematics Olympiad (VTMO, in Vietnamese "Olympic Toán TITAN Việt Nam") is an annual national mathematics competition in Vietnam for students from Grade 2 to Grade 9, organised by TITAN Education. Each grade has its own paper, written in Vietnamese, combining multiple-choice and fill-in-the-answer questions. The top medal winners in each grade are then invited to a separate championship round, the TITAN Cup.
VTMO is a domestic contest with no international round, but its papers are a useful source of olympiad-style practice for any primary or lower secondary student. Because the original papers are in Vietnamese, the English versions you may see are translations. This page explains the VTMO levels, rounds, exam format and how to prepare with past papers.
Overview
VTMO has been held every year since 2012. It is organised by TITAN Education, a Vietnamese education company, at test centres in a number of provinces and cities across Vietnam, including Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City. Students sit the paper in person and write their answers on an answer sheet.
Unlike most competitions on Edupiad, VTMO is not an international olympiad. It has no overseas centres and no international final, and the papers are written for students following the Vietnamese curriculum. For international readers, it is a good example of a national-level contest with a clear structure and a separate invitation round for the strongest students.
VTMO levels and grades
| Level | Grades | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Grade 2 | Grade 2 | |
| Grade 3 | Grade 3 | |
| Grade 4 | Grade 4 | |
| Grade 5 | Grade 5 | |
| Grade 6 | Grade 6 | Lower secondary in Vietnam, but uses the same time limit as Grades 2-5 |
| Grade 7 | Grade 7 | |
| Grade 8 | Grade 8 | |
| Grade 9 | Grade 9 |
There are no papers for kindergarten, Grade 1 or upper secondary (Grades 10-12).
Rounds
- Main Round. Open to all registered students from Grade 2 to Grade 9. Medals (gold, silver and bronze) are awarded according to results in each grade.
- TITAN Cup. An invitation round for the top medal winners in each grade, around 30 students per grade. It uses a different, harder paper with more open-ended questions.
VTMO exam format and scoring
The structure of VTMO papers has changed over the years. Older papers had 20 questions in two parts. The structure published by the organisers for the 2027 season is:
| Part | Questions | Correct | Wrong | Blank |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| A. Multiple choice | 1-10 | +3 | -1 | 0 |
| A. Multiple choice | 11-20 | +4 | -1 | 0 |
| B. Fill in the answer | 21-25 | +6 | 0 | 0 |
- Maximum score: 100 points.
- Time: 90 minutes for Grades 2-6, 120 minutes for Grades 7-9.
- Penalty: a wrong answer in Part A loses 1 point; Part B has no penalty.
The TITAN Cup paper varies by grade. For Grades 2-3 it has multiple-choice and fill-in-the-answer questions. For Grades 4-6 it combines fill-in-the-answer questions with a few problems that need written solutions. For Grades 7-9 it consists only of written-solution problems. Time limits for the TITAN Cup range from 90 minutes for the youngest grades to 150 minutes for Grade 9.
When is it held
VTMO follows the Vietnamese school year. Registration usually runs from early November to early December, the Main Round takes place in January, and the TITAN Cup follows in February. Students register through the organiser's official channels. Exact dates change each season, so check the VTMO website.
How to prepare with past papers
- Be careful with guessing in Part A. A wrong answer costs 1 point while a blank costs nothing. A guess between two remaining options is reasonable, but a blind guess among all options usually is not worth it.
- Secure Part B. The fill-in-the-answer questions carry 6 points each with no penalty, so always write your best answer. Double-check units and whether the question asks for a number, a count or a remainder.
- Practise with the right time limit. 90 or 120 minutes for 25 questions gives more time per question than many international contests, which means questions are designed to need several steps. Use the extra time to check your work.
- Note that older papers may differ. Papers from earlier years may have 20 questions and different scoring, so compare scores within the same format.
- Prepare written solutions for the TITAN Cup. If you are aiming for the Cup, practise writing complete, well-organised solutions, especially for Grades 4-9.
On Edupiad you can take VTMO past papers online with a timer, get automatic marking for questions with a fixed answer when you submit, and review each question afterwards. Problems that require a written solution cannot be marked automatically. Available years, grades and solutions depend on what has been added to the library.
Frequently asked questions
What grades can take VTMO?
VTMO is for students from Grade 2 to Grade 9, with a separate paper for each grade.
Does VTMO have negative marking?
Yes, in Part A. In the structure published for the 2027 season, a wrong multiple-choice answer loses 1 point and a blank scores 0. Part B has no penalty.

What is the TITAN Cup?
The TITAN Cup is an invitation round held after the Main Round for around the top 30 medal winners in each grade. Its papers are harder and, for older grades, consist of problems that need full written solutions.

In recent seasons, Grades 2-6 have 90 minutes and Grades 7-9 have 120 minutes.
