About IMEC
IMEC is the international mathematics olympiad run by UniCEP (Universal Center of Educational Platform), an education organization based in Australia. It is open to students from kindergarten to Grade 12, split into seven levels from IMEC 0 to IMEC 6, and every paper has 25 multiple-choice questions to be solved in 60 minutes. Students first sit a Qualification Round in their own country, and award winners are invited to an in-person Global Round.
UniCEP's own pages spell out the acronym in two ways, "International Mathematics Exam Center Olympiad" on the IMEC page and "International Mathematics Excellence Challenge" on the About page, so most families simply call it IMEC. This guide explains the IMEC levels, the IMEC exam format and scoring, the rounds, and how to use IMEC past papers well.
Overview
UniCEP was founded in 2017. According to its timeline, the IMEC Mathematics Olympiad was launched in 2019, followed by the JEO-SEO English Olympics in 2020 and the ISCO Science Challenge in 2021. IMEC has two sister contests from the same organizer: ISCO for science and JEO-SEO for English. The three share the same level structure (two school grades per level), the same two rounds and the same scoring rule, so a student can sit several of them in one season.
UniCEP says students from more than 35 countries take part, registering directly on the UniCEP website or through official country representatives. The IMEC paper is available in English, Russian and Chinese.
IMEC levels and grades
IMEC is one of the few international olympiads with a separate kindergarten paper. Each level above kindergarten covers two consecutive grades.
| Level | Grades | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| IMEC 0 | Kindergarten | Basic arithmetic, the only kindergarten paper among the UniCEP contests |
| IMEC 1 | Grade 1-2 | |
| IMEC 2 | Grade 3-4 | |
| IMEC 3 | Grade 5-6 | |
| IMEC 4 | Grade 7-8 | |
| IMEC 5 | Grade 9-10 | |
| IMEC 6 | Grade 11-12 | Upper-secondary topics |
The official syllabus moves from basic arithmetic at IMEC 0 to algebra, geometry, trigonometry, logarithms, data representation and logic questions at the upper levels. Students register for the level that matches the grade they are in.
Rounds
IMEC has two rounds:
- Qualification Round. All registered students take this round, either online or on paper, organized by UniCEP or its official representative in each country. Some countries, including Vietnam, call this stage the national round.
- Global Round. Students who receive a Diamond, Gold, Silver, Bronze or Honourable Mention award in the Qualification Round are eligible. The Global Round is held in person. UniCEP's timeline lists Global Rounds in London (2022 and 2023), Sydney (2024 to 2026), Dubai (2025) and Kuala Lumpur (2026). For the 2026-2027 season the organizer lists Sydney in April 2027 and Malaysia in June 2027.
Taking part in the Global Round is optional. A student can sit only the Qualification Round and still receive an award from it.
IMEC exam format and scoring
| Item | Detail |
|---|---|
| Number of questions | 25 |
| Question type | Multiple choice, 4 options |
| Time | 60 minutes |
| Correct answer | +4 points |
| Incorrect answer | -1 point |
| Maximum score | 100 points |
In the Global Round, the organizer awards Gold to the top 10% of each level, Silver to the next 20%, Bronze to the next 30% and Honourable Mention to the next 40%.
The negative marking is the detail most students forget. Every wrong answer takes a point away, so a paper with many careless mistakes can score lower than a paper with fewer answers but higher accuracy.
When is IMEC held
The Qualification Round normally takes place in November, with registration opening in the second half of the year. The exact date depends on the country: UniCEP sets an international date, and country representatives may run their own sitting on a different day in the same period. Global Rounds follow in the first half of the next calendar year. Check the UniCEP website or your country representative for the current deadline and fee.
How to prepare with IMEC past papers
- Work at the right level first. Start with past papers from your own level, then try one level up once you can finish comfortably within 60 minutes.
- Train for 2.4 minutes per question. 60 minutes for 25 questions leaves little time for long calculations. Practise spotting the quick method, such as estimation, checking the answer choices, or working backwards.
- Use the scoring rule wisely. A correct answer earns four times what a wrong answer costs. If you can eliminate one or two options, an educated guess is usually worth it. A pure guess on a question you have not read carefully is a gamble; it is better to spend that time on questions you can actually solve.
- Review every mistake by topic. Group your errors (fractions, geometry, logic puzzles, word problems) and revise the weakest group before the next paper.
- Practise under real conditions. Sit at least a few complete papers in one go with a timer, without notes, so the Qualification Round feels familiar.
On Edupiad you can take IMEC past papers online with a timer, have your answers marked automatically, and review each question after you submit. The years and solutions available vary by level.
Frequently asked questions
What grades can take IMEC?
IMEC is open from kindergarten to Grade 12. IMEC 0 is for kindergarten, and IMEC 1 to IMEC 6 each cover two grades, from Grade 1-2 up to Grade 11-12.
Does IMEC have negative marking?
Yes. According to the official rules, each correct answer earns 4 points and each incorrect answer loses 1 point. With 25 questions, the maximum score is 100.
How many questions are in the IMEC exam and how long is it?
Each IMEC paper has 25 multiple-choice questions with four options, and students have 60 minutes.
How do I qualify for the IMEC Global Round?
Students who win a Diamond, Gold, Silver, Bronze or Honourable Mention award in the Qualification Round are eligible to register for the Global Round.
Is IMEC the same as ISCO and JEO-SEO?
No, but they come from the same organizer. IMEC is mathematics, ISCO is science and JEO-SEO is English. All three are run by UniCEP with a similar level structure and two rounds, but IMEC is the only one with a kindergarten level.
What does IMEC stand for?
UniCEP uses two expansions on its own website: International Mathematics Exam Center Olympiad and International Mathematics Excellence Challenge. Both refer to the same contest.
